Surround yourself with nature’s bounties – visit Bagaces for the ultimate wild escape

Bagaces is a Costa Rican paradise for nature lovers. Just a short drive off the world-famous Pan-American highway (Route One), it’s nestled inside Guanacaste province and protected on its western edge by the Rio Salto River. Bagaces is an unspoiled wilderness where you can join forces with nature, soak up the sunshine and get lost exploring the many rivers and lakes that swirl through its vast terrain.

Things to Do

NATURE
Bagaces is known for its beautiful landscape and dedication to conservation. Watch some of its 50,000 different species of waterfowl and forest birds gliding through the brushlands. Spend your evenings watching the sun go down by the river - with a chorus of frogs chiming away. Or take a trip underground to the carved limestone caverns of the subterranean Barra Honda national park. Looking for a fierier adventure? Head north to the Guipilapa and Miravalles volcanoes. They’re dormant, although some locals think differently.

WATER
While exploring, take to the water on the Rio Celeste River. Its vibrant blue colour is created by a natural combination of elements - making the river shine as it sashays across the landscape. Don’t miss the Rio Celeste waterfall, 90 metres of vivid blue encased by the greenest mangroves.  Or take a floating tour down the Tempisque River, flowing through the lowlands and taking in the tranquillity of the nature that surrounds you.

SPORTS
Get your heart racing during your Bagaces stay by white water rafting down the Tenorio River. Whether it’s a 30-minute dash - or an adrenalin filled eight miles - exploring the various rivers by raft gives the best views.  Or, travel by land, climbing high up volcanoes or weaving through the forests following one of the many hiking routes that take you through the canton. The Guanacaste countryside is perfect for both experienced and non-experienced hikers, with gently meandering paths and more physically challenging trails.

Top Tip from SLH

Fire up your taste buds in Bagaces with a spicy yet refreshing glass of Agua de Sapo – otherwise known as toad water to the locals.
