Things to do
ART & CULTURE
In years gone by, Pyrgos was home to world-renowned marble artists, and examples of their creative talents lie all over the village. Drop into marble workshops to see modern masters at work. Or visit Spira Marble Art Gallery (SMAG) and pick out a piece to take home as a memento of Pyrgos.
HISTORY
At the top of most visitors’ lists is Pyrgos Kasteli. Once a Venetian fort, the ruins are now one of just five castles on the island. While you’re here, be sure to peek inside the neighbouring Church of Theotokaki. Within the pure, white building are some beautiful frescoes.
LANDMARKS
If your legs are up to it, walk to the top of Mount Profitis Ilias. The sensational views, stretching all the way to Oia, are a just reward for the climb. At the peak is an old monastery with a museum, too. For several months of the year it opens its doors for a glimpse at the relics in its collection.
