Things to do
WINE
When you sip wine in Langhe, you’re tasting history. This wine-growing region and its wine-making heritage proudly features on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. And it’s here that many of Italy’s finest reds are produced, including barolo and barbaresco. The best way to get to know these grapes is by visiting the cellars – cantina communale – peppered throughout the hilltop towns.
FOOD
There may be gold in some hills, but in Langhe, the treasure is white truffles. You can enjoy delicious dishes and festivals celebrating this prized ingredient across the region, year-round. But devotees should visit in autumn when Alba hosts the truffle fair, and the air around every agriturismo is heavy with the scent of truffle.
HISTORY
Beautifully preserved piazzas and centuries-old clock towers are hallmarks of historical Langhe. Go hilltop hopping to experience life in its towns and villages – now, and then. Grinzane Cavour is home to an impressive castle, while medieval Neive has not one but two towers. Take the funicular railway to explore Mondovi’s ancient quarter. Or slow right down in Bra and take in Bernini’s Chiesa di San Andrea in all its glory.
