Introducing Yorkshire

As England’s largest county, Yorkshire has something for every taste –from bustling seaside towns to trend-setting cities, rugged moors to chic spas. Watch the fisherman bring in their haul in Whitby. Escape to the green and rolling dales that inspired Wuthering Heights. Catch the latest performances in one of Sheffield’s renowned theatres. Whether you set out to explore Yorkshire from a luxury city-centre hotel or a country retreat, it’s hard not to fall for ‘God’s Own County’.

Things to do

NATURE
Yorkshire boasts two national parks. Hike, bike or ride across the unspoilt North York Moors – a blanket of purple heather and ancient woodland, peppered with stone cottages and fringed by fishing villages. Or hop aboard the traditional steam engine at Whitby. Then take a trip to the Peak District and into its craggy hills, valleys and lakes, in search of the perfect vista.

FOOD & DRINK
Yorkshire pudding is known – and loved – the breadth of Britain. But seek out a tearoom to try some of the county’s sweeter specialities. Savour sticky parkin, slices of curd tart and the eponymous ‘fat rascal’ – somewhere between a scone and a teacake. Enjoy pikelets – local pancakes – for breakfast. Sip ginger beer in the afternoon. And be sure to have some liquorice in your pocket for when you’re out exploring.

CULTURE
With spectacular scenery all around, it’s no surprise Yorkshire has inspired novelists, playwrights and poets for centuries. Pay a visit to Bram Stoker’s Whitby, with a copy of Dracula in-hand. Walk the wild and windy moors so beloved by the Brontës. After a bracing hike, cosy up in a pub and savour a pint of the region’s famous ales.

Top Tip from SLH

The National Parks are about more than purely natural beauty. Explore Nidderdale or the Howardian Hills and you’ll come across abbey ruins, castles and priories, too.
