Barracuda Hotel & Villas

An untouched slice of paradise in Brazil’s beautiful Itacaré

Tucked away in Bahia, Brazil, is a tiny cove part-circled by the deep green Atlantic Forest. And in this cove is Barracuda Hotel & Villas. This secluded all-suite retreat is a get-away-from-it-all destination in its truest sense, effortlessly blending its Bahian roots with the owners’ Swedish heritage. With sustainability in its soul, it introduces guests to the raw beauty of Itacaré.

In this serene setting, time moves at a more leisurely pace. Look out across the azure sea or forest from your suite or villa, with windows for walls that frame breath-catching views. Each has been thoughtfully designed in authentic Bahian style and in harmony with the landscape – with plenty of luxury touches. The hotel’s centrepiece is its sleek infinity pool, with chic loungers on the ocean-facing deck. Stretch out here, or head to the wooden yoga pavilion for sun salutations in the midst of the forest.

Though Barracuda Hotel & Villas feels off-grid, it’s close enough to local towns to get a flavour of Bahian life. And its community initiatives – from the Quilombola Capoeira Association to social surfing projects – give back to the locals. Learn more by asking the hotel to arrange authentic experiences, courtesy of Paulo and his team – affectionately dubbed the ‘tribe’. It could be jeep rides into the wild forest, surfing lessons, kayak trips, mangrove journeys, fishing or adventures to discover Itacaré’s secret spots. And when it comes to relaxation, nothing compares to a traditional massage.

Environmentally Conscious

Barracuda’s handpicked team of implantation experts, including an environmental consultant, architect, landscaper, and designers, were entrusted to establish a symbiotic balance between the project and the environment – exclusively using a local workforce who were later incorporated into Barracuda’s green area maintenance team. Certified wood, natural materials and carefully constructed pergolas flood every room with sunlight and a cooling sea breeze (instead of air-conditioning), while native Atlantic Forest species have been planted in the ecogenesis gardens – only 5% of Barracuda’s 21 hectares has been used for the project, and the remaining land is considered a permanent preservation area which has been made even greener through tree-planting schemes alongside fauna and flora ‘rescue and release’ initiatives. You’ll find vegan amenities in the bathrooms, which are packaged in reusable bottles, sip from tabocas straws, a thin bamboo made by the local Taboquinhas community, and bathe in water heated by solar panels and cleaned by Barracuda’s water purification system.

Cultural Custodians

Inspired by the rustic-chic style of Brazil and the contemporary simplicity of Scandinavia, every design detail has been meticulously curated to celebrate the creativity of local artisans – the furniture has been handcrafted by Bahian carpenters, who also worked their magic on the external wooden structures, while the restaurant’s ceramics are handmade in Campos do Jordão, a little mountain town in south-east Brazil. Guests are served artisanal cocoa honey at check-in, given a guided tour of Itacaré’s cultural treasures, and are encouraged to join the festivities of local celebrations such as the day of Yemanjá, Brazil’s goddess of the sea. In addition to the construction and donation of a Cultural Centre for the community, located in one of Itacaré’s most traditional neighbourhoods and managed by an association of Itacaré-born members, The Barracuda Group created Yandê Itacaré Institute, a non-profit association, to contribute to the social and environmental development of Itacaré.

Community Minded

The Barracuda concept was born when a group of friends from Sweden came to visit Itacaré and fell in love with the natural beauty and charming people of this special place. Today, the group employs 150 employees, 87% of whom are from Itacaré, and with great pride refers to itself as a ‘tribe’, reflecting its community-centric ethos. The members of the Barracuda Tribe personally know their local suppliers – from cocoa farmers and chocolate makers to fishermen – and regularly visit the coastal community and rural areas to purchase ingredients directly from the source. The Barracuda-founded Instituto Yandê Itacaré promotes local entrepreneurial education and encourages community-based initiatives, currently serving around 600 residents of low-income urban and rural areas, while supporting 12 social and environmental projects such as ‘Surfing for the Future’ - in partnership with Itacaré’s Surfing Association (ASI), this holistic project aims to achieve social inclusion of under-privileged children through surf lessons, environmental education and psychological support.

Independent Minds: Juliana Ghiotto

As one of Brazil’s best kept secrets along the ‘Cocoa Coast’, Itacaré blissfully enjoys an under-the-radar existence – surfers plant their boards on pristine palm-fringed beaches, locals paddle through mangrove-entangled waters and cool off in crystal-clear lagoons, and the occasional thud of a coconut hitting the sand sets the pace for this rainforest-wrapped region’s relaxed rhythm.

Visitors will soon see why Itacaré ignited a shared spark in Brazilian-born Juliana Ghiotto, her husband Daniel (a local surfer), and their Swedish friends, who have not only made the groovy Bahia state their home, but put it on the map for guests in search of a barefoot lifestyle – which treads lightly on this special place and its people.

The mighty mangroves

For total immersion in the natural beauty of Itacaré, embark on a mangrove tour. First, decide between a canoe, boat, or SUP. Your peaceful journey up the Rio de Contas will take you past the riverside villages that call this stretch of the water home. Finally, wade into the waterfall here to soak up this stunning setting.

Surf’s up

Surfing is a way of life in this part of Brazil. And wave riders here have been seeking the ultimate point break since the ‘80s. Today, beachgoers can discover some of Bahia’s most pristine stretches of coastline as they paddle out on a surf class or guided tour.
