Dar Ahlam
Experience a land of adventure from this Kasbah near Ouarzazate, gateway to the Moroccan desert
On the fringes of the Moroccan desert, shaded by the palms, lies Dar Ahlam. Terracotta coloured stone meets cerulean skies as this traditional Kasbah cuts an imposing shape across the landscape. Unwind in a haven of manicured lawns and fragrant almond blossom. Or step out into the wilderness of the desert for a night under the stars, where you will soak up the elegant beauty in the privacy of your own luxury tent.
The décor changes with the seasons, sumptuous fabrics and colours bringing the environment to life. Days at Dar Ahlam are long and luxurious. Without the distractions of television and technology, you can really unwind. Instead, indulge in a massage under the olive trees or head off for refreshments by the river. Spend a balmy evening atop the Kasbah, aperitif in hand, before feasting on a freshly prepared supper under the vast sky.

Actively sustainable luxury hotels
Environmentally Conscious
This traditional Moroccan Kasbah has been thoughtfully constructed using local materials such as adobe, bamboo, and wood from lemon and olive trees, minimising its energy use by installing solar panels and a water treatment system which makes tap water drinkable in the desert – reducing the need for plastic water bottles by as much as 90%. The system also provides water for the on-site aromatic herb garden, while any excess is supplied to the Palmeraie water canal. Thanks to its clever architectural insulation, there is no need for air-conditioning, and pipes are protected to keep the heat inside. The hotel runs a successful rubbish collection and recycling programme to separate and recycle key resources, including selling glass to a factory in Marrakech, and feeding organics to farm animals.
Cultural Custodians
Days at Dar Ahlam are shaped around ultra-personalised experiences which immerse guests in Berber culture, from sleeping beneath the stars in a traditional tent, sunrise tea ceremonies in the Sahara, to locally-led treks into the Valley of Roses, and visits to hilltop villages which date back to the 12th century. The historical houses of the families who welcome Dar Ahlam guests into their homes are refurbished and restored by the hotel to protect the buildings’ traditional features, which also improves the living conditions for the residents. Dar Ahlam runs the Memory Road project in southern Morocco in partnership with the Global Heritage Fund to renovate entire, abandoned villages and bring them back to life for the community and preserve the Berber way of life for generations to come.
Community Minded
The majority of Dar Ahlam’s team are not only locals, but are the workers who helped transform the Kasbah during the original renovation works into the ‘small house’ concept hotel that it is today, becoming long term members of staff with access to the 700,000 heures sustainability training programme which is based at the hotel. As an active member of its Berber village community, Dar Ahlam purchases seasonal, largely vegetarian ingredients from local souks, including pomegranate vinegar, date caramel, tall herb grass honey, and argan oil, as well as from women’s associations in nearby villages (the retired gardener still sells his vegetables to the hotel kitchen). The hotel’s micro-credit system involves local breeders in high quality, eco-friendly animal rearing, to improve animal welfare and meat quality.

Independent Minds: Thierry Teyssier
Rebellious by nature, visionary hotelier Thierry Teyssier has thrown the traditional hospitality rule book out the window by adopting a bespoke approach to each and every guest at Dar Ahlam, which more than lives up to its Arabic translation as the ‘House of Dreams’. Bringing a sense of showmanship learned during his days as a French actor to his Moroccan Kasbah, all the world’s a stage for Thierry when it comes to creating unique experiences for his guests.
