Links House at Royal Dornoch

Classical country estate elegance at this Highlands retreat with Royal Dornoch Golf Club connections

Heritage and tradition are woven into the fabric of this country manor hotel. Links House blends a sense of history with modern sensibilities – and luxury with creature comforts. Rooms and suites are dotted across the Main House, built in 1843, The Mews, and Glenshiel, the hotel’s newest addition. All are named after North Highland Salmon Fishing rivers – a reminder that the beauty of the great outdoors flows through Links House.

Outside, the hotel’s grounds and gardens are breath-catchingly beautiful. Indoors, well-placed antiques, colourful tartan prints and modern touches wrap guests in warmth and elegance. Gifts from Scotland’s waters, fields, forests and skies, presented with minimal interruption is the philosophy of Links House’s 2AA Rosette Fine Dining restaurant, MARA. Sample the delights of the local highland larder and taste the best seafood in Scotland, before pulling up a stool where the jury once sat in The Courtroom for everything from coffee to craft ale – and weekly live music. Or join a Scottish ‘hooley’ at weekends in The Courtyard, serving alfresco seafood and cool pints.

Links House is so close to the Royal Dornoch green that you can hear the ‘thwack’ of the balls from the first tee. While golf is practically a national pastime here, there is much more to discover in the Highlands. Fly fish for wild salmon and trout on a guided trip hosted by the hotel’s own Director of Fishing. Hike (or bike) through gorse-filled landscapes and along shorelines, taking in waterfalls and lochs. Or discover some of the roads less travelled in a classic car, skirting the North Coast 500. Links House is the perfect base for your explorations.

From our back yard…

The Highlands influences every element of The Courtyard at Links House. Serving up alfresco food, drinks and live music, it’s the place for everything from fish and chips after a day at the coast, to kimchi-laden poke bowls in the late Scottish sun. And while it’s an eclectic menu, Fridays always see the chefs celebrate fresh-off-the-boat seafood: langoustine, scallops and prawns by the pint. Continuing the seafood theme, the MARA Head Chef focuses on seasonal delicacies, sourced from a selection of local suppliers – from fresh Dornoch mussels, lobster and langoustines from nearby Portmahomack to game from Bonar Bridge.

Above par golfing

One of the world’s finest golf courses is on the doorstep of Links House. Royal Dornoch Golf Club is one of five championship level links greens within striking distance of the hotel – most on the fringes of the coast. Step straight out from the front door and onto the first tee, where iconic names such as Old Tom Morris and John Sutherland graced the fairway.

This green and pleasant (High)land

Exercise your ‘Right to Roam’ and explore the raw beauty of the North Highlands. A guided hike or bike around Dornoch will take you off-road through enchanting forests and along craggy coastline. Meanwhile, a full day out could see you exploring Caithness, Easter Ross or Loch Ness. Or set out early to scale one of Scotland’s ‘Munros’, ‘Corbetts’, ‘Grahams’ or ‘Donalds’ – 3000+ foot and 2500-3000 foot mountains respectively. The teams at Links House will be on hand with maps, tips and personal guides to help you on your way.
