Nusfjord Village & Resort

Scenic seclusion on the north-west coast of Norway

Norway’s rich seafaring history comes alive at Nusfjord Village & Resort, set in a traditional fishing village in the breathtaking Lofoten Islands where dramatic seas meet towering mountains. Perched invitingly around the tiny harbour, a collection of authentic fishermen’s cabins, or ‘rorbu’, have been lovingly refurbished, bringing a taste of modern comfort to a place bursting with heritage and soul.

Each cabin has its own unique charm, whether swaying on wooden stilts bay-side, or nestled in the heart of the village. Original timber walls, cosy blankets and neutral tones abound, while windows frame views of the soaring fjords. For an even clearer vista, head to the Nordic Spa’s seafront hot tub to admire the amazing view of the fjord, cocktail in hand. Or, if it’s a winter visit, settle in with something warm for a chance to spot the dazzling Northern Lights.

Nusfjord Environment 2

Environmentally Conscious

Going beyond recycling, energy-saving measures, and responsible tourism practices (though these are all dutifully in place), these remote lodgings have been designed to blend seamlessly with the Arctic wilderness while ensuring a minimal impact on its fragile, wildlife-rich ecosystem. Kittiwakes are thriving on the bird cliff in Nusfjord’s harbour, and ongoing conservation efforts including regular beach cleans are helping to protect this highly threatened seagull (and other species). The cabins are naturally ventilated and re-insulated, and the entire resort draws on the neighbouring pristine lake as an abundant, natural water source. Local farmers and sustainable fisheries supply the hotel’s restaurant, as well as Nusfjord’s own organic garden. Exploring the incredible scenery is done with a ‘tread lightly’ approach, thanks to the resort’s hiking maps and shuttle service. And every time guests skip the daily room clean, Nusfjord’s partner Hotels for Trees plants a new tree.

Nusfjord-Culture

Cultural Custodians

The village of Nusfjord has been painstakingly preserved as a ‘living museum’ and is home to five protected buildings under the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage. Traditional architectural practices are still respected, and various tools and artefacts have been left in workshops and warehouses (maintained as cultural exhibitions) to shed light on the village’s seafaring and agricultural history. In the hotel rooms, furnishings and materials have been upcycled where possible – such as old fishing crates now standing in for dining tables. At the heart of the resort lies Salteriet, a former fish salt house turned art gallery that displays contemporary works by Nordic painters, ceramicists, sculptors, and all manner of artists and craftsmen. Local storytellers are on hand to narrate Norse myths and legends, and guests are treated to a bedtime story of Arctic folklore placed on their nightstands every evening.

Nusfjord-Community

Community Minded

Today, just 19 residents call Nusfjord their permanent home – but the seafaring spirit of their ancestors still lives on and is celebrated through local festivals, markets, and excursions supported by the resort. These include wildlife-watching cruises in traditional fishing boats, arctic surfing, snowshoeing, mountaineering, and more – all led by local guides. Nusfjord’s staff are hired from the village and nearby communities, and the hotel invests in local infrastructure such as improving the roads and providing more accessible transport options. The resort purchases directly from local suppliers and follows generations-old recipes, including grilled stockfish (one of Lofoten’s largest exports) that’s prepared, dried, and rehydrated by Nusfjord chefs. Guests can learn more about this traditional process and other Arctic dishes through the resort’s culinary experiences. Carefully curated artisan products are also available to buy in Landhandelen (Nusfjord’s general store), from handmade woollen knitwear to freshly gathered seaweed.
