A relaxed townhouse duo full of Scottish spirit in the heart of Edinburgh

An Edinburgh boutique hotel like no other, The Dunstane Houses combine upscale retreat vibes with an authentic Scottish soul. Together, these two meticulously restored Victorian townhouses – just across the street from each other – create a refined, elegant and relaxed city bolthole.

Bedrooms are spread across Dunstane House and Hampton House, and are designed to throw a spotlight on the buildings’ heritage. Warm tweeds, rich velvets and printed wallpapers add plenty of character, while freestanding baths, artisanal treats and fluffy robes dial up the comfort – and romance. If you want to kick back outside your bedroom, the Ba’ Bar and its lounge keep things elegant yet relaxed. Whisky lovers need look no further: the bar’s vintage whisky cabinet is full of rare delights, while the all-day menu serves up classic Scottish dishes with a signature twist.

Outside, the city’s Old Town awaits. A gentle stroll from the hotel will take you to Edinburgh Castle, while the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is just an amble along the Water of Leith. Adventurers might like to up the pace and tackle Arthur’s Seat for far-reaching Highland views, before returning to enjoy a wee dram in front of the fire in your Edinburgh home-from-home.

Enjoy your stay!

Tradition with a twist

It might be an English tradition, but afternoon tea at The Dunstane Houses is given a singularly Scottish spin. Served in the cosy lounge, the spread includes treats such as Scottish preserves, Orkney cheddar finger sandwiches and fine whole-leaf teas from a St Andrew’s based tea company. For ultimate indulgence, pick a gin from the bar’s vast artisan selection to pair with your cakes.

The taste of Scotland

If you struggle to tell a single malt from a blend – or are simply curious about Scottish artisan spirits – settle in for a whisky or gin tasting in the cosy surroundings of Ba’ Bar. Let the experts take you on a whistle-stop tasting tour of Orkney’s gins or Scotland’s whisky regions. Foodies can discover how to pair whisky with cheese, while would-be mixologists can learn to stir (and never shake) the perfect martini.

Independent Minds: Shirley Mowat

Bringing a breath of fresh Orkney air to the heart of the Scottish capital, The Dunstane Houses stylishly blends owner Shirley Mowat’s Orcadian roots with the neoclassical design of old-town Edinburgh. When heading for London in 1988, what was supposed to be a weekend’s stop-off to visit friends in Edinburgh became a permanent arrangement – and instead of looking back, Shirley decided to bring her homeland with her.
