Arctic Bath

Dream-like landscapes and the great indoors in spellbinding Swedish Lapland

There’s no dipping your toe into Arctic Bath. This one-of-a-kind hotel immerses guests in the epic scenery of Swedish Lapland: its frost-crowned forests, where moose and reindeer leave tracks in the snow. And where ice fishing is just one of the adventures to embark on. From the spa with its open-air bath, to the restaurant showcasing local ingredients, Arctic Bath taps into its wonderland setting.

Striking Land, Water and Suite cabins are modern architectural marvels that seem to hover above the ground – or water. Glass walls, floating walkways and sky-gazing decks connect the inside with the great outdoors – and take loft living to a whole new level. This is Scandinavian design at its most chic, where the elements intertwine with interiors crafted from wood, stone and ‘touch me’ textiles.

Stepping out from your fire-warmed lodge could see you forest bathing, kayaking along Luleå River or exploring the wilder Storforsen Nature Reserve. And, of course, this is Northern Lights territory. Winter brings plenty of opportunities to sled or snowmobile your way across the frozen landscape. While spring sees the midnight sun rise – along with local bears, which you can watch out for on an overnight adventure.

Environmentally Conscious

Arctic Bath centres around a ringed, floating spa boasting a cold bath supplied directly by natural river water, with twelve sustainably constructed, glass-fronted lodges hovering above land and water inspired by the surrounding forest. The entire retreat is run on 100% renewable energy, with natural fireplaces filled with recycled pellets in the cabins and saunas, plus locally made kicksleds, snow-shoes and hiking sticks available in-room. Organic products by native Swedish brand c/o Gerd (based in the nearby village of Jokkmokk) are incorporated into a range of holistic treatments, from Swedish Arctic Massages to Julevädno sauna rituals, while seasonal, naturally-grown ingredients on the hyper-local restaurant menu are sourced from the surrounding forest and farms and used in recipes gathered from the chef’s friends and families over the years.

Cultural Custodians

Thanks to its proximity to Jokkmokk, a cultural centre for the Sámi people (indigenous reindeer herders and wildlife specialists), Arctic Bath strives to spread the Sámi message to take care of and live in harmony with the natural world. The hotel works closely with a network of Sámi guides, including Anna Kuhumen who invites guests into her home to meet the reindeer and listen to stories passed down the generations and joik (traditional Sámi singing) around the fireplace. The hotel also has a lávvu tent during the winter where traditional meals are cooked over a Muurikka, an ancient Scandinavian firepit, for an authentic taste of Northern Europe’s last remaining wilderness.

Community Minded

Instilling every guest experience with the spirit of the small Swedish Lapland community, locally owned Arctic Bath exclusively works with local guides and businesses – from berry picking and husky-sledding to Northern Lights excursions and wilderness photography tours. There’s even a resident moose whisperer, a Sámi nature conservationist and wildlife expert who offers moose safari sessions and ice-fishing experiences together with his Swedish wife, who bakes the most delicious lingonberry buns and wilderness wraps. All hand-crafted dinnerware, vases, and candleholders are sourced from a little shop in Luleå, while the winterwear sold in the hotel’s boutique and at the village Christmas market is handmade by a local family.

Arctic Bath Wellness

Wellness in a winter wonderland

The spa at Arctic Bath takes wellness far beyond massage and facial territory. With constant nods to the spectacular surrounding landscape, spa rituals make use of all-natural ingredients. Treat the skin to a wild lavender scrub. Discover the ancient art of Gua Sha. Or experience a classic Svensk Arktisk Massage, which uses organic oils and healing stones – and traditional jojk music as a soothing soundtrack.

Arctic Bath Food

Nature’s larder

With their minimalist presentation and maximum flavour focus, the five-course set meals at Arctic Bath are the kind you want to photograph. Harnessing the bounty (and beauty) of nature, each plate looks like a just-foraged masterpiece. Signature dishes are modern takes on the traditions and techniques of the Northern territories, putting innovative spins on recipes handed down through generations. Meanwhile at breakfast you’ll feast on breads, charcuterie and cheeses from nearby Jokkmokk and Vuollerim – and sip smoothies made from local fruits and berries.

Arctic Bath

The greatest outdoors

Sea kayaking, snow biking, husky sledding and ice fishing. Your ‘to do’ list at Arctic Bath will be epic. Wildlife enthusiasts can join a Sámi reindeer herder at an Arctic circle camp, canoe alongside beavers, embark on a moose safari, photograph golden eagles or go bear spotting. And when winter comes, there’s snowmobiling, cross country skiing and snowshoe hiking to try. Each daytrip into the idyllic landscape around Arctic Bath leaves guests with a lifetime of memories.

Arctic Bath Ask a Local

Meet the Moose Whisperer

Mikael “Micke” Suorra has become somewhat of a local legend in Swedish Lapland, known to both villagers and the animal kingdom alike for his friendly conversations – learning to call hazel grouse from his father at the age of eight, Micke went on to speak moose, fox, bear, and deer over the years. He tells us (in English, not moose) more about life as a nature conservationist, and conversationalist, in Northern Europe’s last remaining wilderness.

Maarten Raes Independent Minds

Independent Minds: Maarten Raes

A modern take on an old Nordic tradition of timber transportation, uber-cool newcomer Arctic Bath floats and freezes on the Lule River from one season to the next beneath the Northern Lights and midnight sun. Instilling every guest experience with the spirit of the small Swedish Lapland community and a respect for its natural landscape, Maarten Raes and local co-owners are setting fresh standards of slow travel.

Incredible food and scenery

A real once in a lifetime stay - visiting in summer was beautiful and it was our first time seeing the midnight sun. Great to swim in the river, enjoy the sauna, and finish the days with incredible food at the restaurant.

A very unique and special place

The Arctic Bath is not just a beautiful hotel, it's not just any 5 star hotel with amazing spa facilities and a michilin star worth restaurant. The Arctic Bath is a unique and special place, where you feel like you're surrounded by nature, friends and amazing adventures. What makes an hotel different Read more[SPLIT]Read lessis the place and the people. The Arctic Bath staff is friendly, professional, caring and most of all, they are all in aw of this magic place and they love it so much that you cannot help to fall in love with the place yourself. This is a place to go with an open mind and discover how the life in Lapland is (tough and amazing at the same time) and you have plenty to explore and experiency during your stay (you have to go ice fishing and hear all the stories about the life of a Sami). Lastly, the restaurant feels cozy as everything in the Arctic Bath and the food is absolutely delicious, the young but experienced chefs elevate the hotel and all its meals to a different mindblowing level.
