Environmentally Conscious

“It was not my intention to start a business; it was to revive a village,” says John Papadouris, who returned to his beloved but neglected childhood village, Kalopanayiotis, where he decided to drive a restoration project to preserve the mountain culture and way of life – beginning with Casale Panayiotis. Vineyards are being re-established, historic buildings restored, and orchards regenerated – which guests can explore, basket in hand, to pick seasonal fruit and enjoy a glass of homemade lemonade beneath the shade of olive trees. A state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant has been installed to recycle the hotel’s grey and black water which is then used to irrigate the gardens, while 10 trail routes have been marked through the Troodos mountains for hiking and e-biking.

Cultural Custodians

Casale Panayiotis was built in complete compliance with the Cyprus Department of Antiquity, to ensure every room was renovated in line with the village’s cultural and architectural heritage. Tucked within the Marathasa area, which is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful, unspoilt regions of Cyprus, Casale Panayiotis encourages guests to explore the treasure trove of Byzantine wonders and well-preserved Venetian bridges on their doorstep through guided tours. There are six UNESCO-listed Byzantine churches within a 30-minute drive of Kalopanayiotis, with breathtakingly beautiful frescoes, including the 11th-century Monastery of Saint John Lampadistes with the neighbouring Icon Museum. Stroll around the village with a friendly local guide, visiting a water mill, tasting the natural sulphur-spring water, or join Aliki, a skilled local weaver, for a basket-making workshop.

Community Minded

Thanks to the positive presence of Casale Panayiotis’ 41 guest rooms in seven houses across the village, as well as traditional cafés and restaurants, villagers have been inspired to invest in their own community, restoring their homes and opening small businesses from which the hotel purchases 90% of its local food products, including trout from a nearby fish farm and artisan wine from local vineyards which fills the hotel’s subterranean cellar. The hotel offers a wonderful array of workshops with members of the local community, from learning how to make traditional sweet preserves using a variety of local fruit, in spoon-size servings as a gesture of hospitality, and halloumi – the Cypriot national cheese – with Maria and Yiota, to delving into the art of beekeeping in the Marathasa Valley, famed for its fragrant ‘nectar of the gods’ honey.

Casale Panayiotis

A way of life

Breathe in the fresh mountain air as you explore the great outdoors at Casale Panayiotis, and indulge in the region’s seasonal delights with orchard and vineyard tours. Take to the trails on a mountain bike, or e-bike if you’re more relaxation-minded. It’s just a short walk over the bridge to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of St John Lampadistis monastery, with its floor-to-ceiling Byzantine frescoes, thought to be one of the most beautiful in Cyprus.

Casale Panayiotis

The language of love

Food is more than just fuel at Casale Panayiotis – it is a way of life, a romantic connection with the earth and surroundings. Visit local cottage industries and discover traditional Marathasa style delicacies, from fruit-and-nutty soutzoukos to baskets of fresh orchard apples that you pick yourself. Try boutique wine tasting – paired with a visit to the local halloumi makers who will teach you how to make Cyprus’ famous export. Or steep your senses in sweetness with a beekeeping and honey experience, led by local experts.
