Perched on the slopes of the Pindus Mountain range in the foothills of the Pindus National Park – considered one of the most important protected areas for the maintenance of alpine biodiversity, every element of Grand Forest Metsovo has been designed with its surrounding peaks and black pine forest in mind. The chalet-style accommodation has been amphitheatrically built to follow and complement the rugged terrain, borrowing traditional architectural elements mainly found in mountainous mainland Greece and supplied by its own supply of natural spring water. A haven for nature-lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, the nearby forests are home to Eurasian brown bears – a conservation priority animal, and provide shelter to over 80 rare bird species.

The local family who own this secluded hideaway originally hail from Metsovo, and enthusiastically share their cultural heritage with their guests at every opportunity. This historic village is brimming with tradition which has long been rooted in livestock farming, artisan crafts and trade, and has become famous for its wine and smoked cheese with a number of bakeries that still run on wood-fired ovens. The hotel offers behind-the-scenes tours of the Averoff Gallery of Neohellenic Art, the Folklore Museum, and UNESCO-listed Meteora monasteries cresting the region’s famous rock formations, and organises trips to the weekend market hosted near the main square, or to browse the silversmith shops of Loannina.

Run by a team of handpicked staff from Metsovo and its local communities, Grand Forest Metsovo keeps the Epirus region at the heart of everything it does. Furniture is handcrafted by local carpenters, jewellery sold in the hotel’s boutique is handmade by Metsovian artisans, and ingredients in the restaurant’s seasonal dishes are sourced from local farmers. Guests are guided through the surrounding wilderness by the hotel’s network of local experts in mountain biking, hiking, horse riding, and kayaking in the summer, plus skiing in the winter – there’s even wild truffle hunting, which guests can gather until they have enough for an alfresco lunch cooked by the river with Greek naturalist Katerina and her friendly dogs.

With the legendary alpine Lake Verliga in the Lakmos Mountains on the doorstep, the great outdoors beckon adventure travellers and back-to-nature seekers alike. Hop on one of the hotel's e-mountain bicycles or get behind the wheel of an off-road Jeep to roam the hidden forests until you reach Verliga's picturesque peak for some breath-taking views. The lake which tumbles down towards the Acheloos River has a special place in Greek history and has been noted for its natural beauty by literary great Herodotus, where you can sit with a champagne picnic freshly prepared by the hotel and simply soak up the altitude wilderness.

Fabulous hotel in a great location.
