Introducing Charleston

Step out of your luxury hotel to the gateway of the Deep South. Charleston has a grandeur and glory that you can’t help but admire. Civil War history abounds, but this is a town that’s very ‘now’ too, with chic shops and exclusive restaurants to tempt any traveller.

Things to do

HISTORY
Charleston is proud of its past and there’s evidence of that throughout the town. From the Charleston Museum to the Naval and Maritime Museum, you’ll find impressive artefacts and fascinating displays about Charleston’s role in the Civil War.

LOCAL CUSTOMS
The Civil War took place 150 years ago, but this is still very much a military town. The Citadel is a military college and if you’re here on a Friday you might be able to catch the impressive sight of full dress parade on the campus.

LANDMARKS
If you appreciate architecture, especially the grand and stately kind, then a walk through the French Quarter is a must. There are plenty of art galleries to wander through while you’re here. And don’t miss Fort Sumter, an island about 30 minutes ferry ride from Charleston. This is where the Civil War started.

Top Tip from SLH

If you’re looking to escape from the tourist trail, travel to Angel Oak. This enormous tree is over 1,000 years old and a great spot for a relaxing picnic.
