Introducing Bamboo Island

Step off the tourist trail and onto Bamboo Island, or Koh Russey as it’s known locally. When you arrive (via speedboat from the Khmer Riviera), you won’t need to walk far to get to know this untouched natural gem – it’s around a mile wide. But though it may be small, it makes a big impression. With golden sands dotted with the occasional traditional wooden hut and BBQ, Bamboo Island feels like one of Cambodia’s untold secrets. Kick off your shoes, soak up the beautiful setting and let the charms of this tiny desert island wash over you.

Things to do

NATURE
Part of Ream National Park, Bamboo Island’s natural beauty is carefully preserved. Its tropical micro-jungle and stretches of just-for-you copper sand are waiting to be discovered. Relax on the soft sand or set out to explore the bamboo and coconut trees that run down the middle of the island. As you walk through the fauna and flora, look out for beautiful exotic birds who call Bamboo Island their home.

ACTIVITIES
The long swathes of beach create the perfect setup for volleyball and beach tennis where you’ll be playing next to the sparkling sea. To cool down, snorkel in the calm waters and swim with schools of colourful fish – or skim the surface on a paddleboard or kayak. Days on Bamboo Island are best wrapped up with a sunset cruise, enjoying an aperitif under the vibrant orange skies.

DAY TRIPS
Though it feels a world away, Bamboo Island is well-connected to mainland Cambodia. Take a boat trip to visit the enchanting Bokor National Park with its panoramic views. While you’re there, pay a visit to the beautiful colonial architecture of Kampot. Or, island hop your way around the Gulf of Thailand. For nature lovers, Koh Thmei is one not to miss – look out for pink dolphins silhouetted against the horizon.

Top Tip from SLH

Make sure you catch some traditional Khmer dancing while here – and even join in yourself. Music often brings locals down to dance on the beach by moonlight.
