Things to do
NATURE
As steam rises up through the trees you can see why the 96 dormant volcanoes that form the Gaoligong mountains are called a ‘natural volcanic geology museum’. Here, monsoon forests and alpine meadows are home to half of China’s wildlife, including the rare red panda. Take a boat across the Beihai wetlands lake, looking out for ducks and purple iris on a carpet of floating grass. In late autumn, stroll through piles of golden leaves in the 400-year-old ginkgo forest. The Lotus hot spring park is another picturesque woodland filled with mineral-rich, geothermal streams and boiling fountains – some spouting 90C water into the air.
HISTORY & CULTURE
Once the invading Mongols were driven out during the Ming Dynasty, Tengchong thrived as a military outpost and trading hub on the Southern Silk Road, where the mineral jade has helped shape the city’s history and culture over the centuries. Find your own precious piece of jade jewellery or ornament in the many shops and market stalls of Heshun Ancient Town. While for some peace and quiet contemplation, visit Guoshang Cemetery that honours Chinese soldiers who died during WWII in the Burma Campaign.
FESTIVALS & EVENTS
Tengchong’s deep spiritual roots come to vibrant life around the Chinese New Year with traditional performances, and religious ceremonies at the Temple Fair in Heshun Ancient Town. If you’re here in mid-April, enjoy getting splashed with water by locals in the street during the Water Splashing Festival – a joyful ritual that is believed to bring good luck, happiness, and prosperity. The skies also light up in July, with bonfires, dancing, and wrestling competitions that celebrate the triumph of light over darkness at the Torch Festival.
