Things to do
WATERFRONT
Home to city beaches and long lazy, walks, showy marinas and harbourside dining, Tallinn has major coastal appeal. Stroll along the Pirita Promenade then dip into the maritime museum to explore Estonia’s naval history. Stop for lunch with a waterside view at one of the Noblessner Seafront Quarter’s chic bistros or trendy cafes, then while away the afternoon admiring street art. If you prefer galleries to graffiti, pop into Kai Art Centre, or keep an eye out for open-studio events.
LANDMARKS
Tallinn has a plethora of beautiful buildings for history buffs and lovers of architecture. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a grand dame of Russian-Orthodox design, with delightful onion domes and incredibly opulent interiors. Tallinn Town Hall is gloriously gothic, and sits on the edge of Raekoja Plats, known for its magical Christmas market. Or for ostentatious overload, make a visit to Kadriorg Palace, a baroque masterpiece built by Peter the Great for his wife, Catherine I.
SHOPPING
From independent craftspeople and busy markets to luxury brands and boutiques, Tallinn offers a rich bounty for shoppers. Folk art and handicrafts can be found in the Estonian Handicraft House in Old Town, while the Estonian Design House in the Solaris Centre is another hub for local treasure. Here you’ll find pieces from nearly a hundred Estonian designers, including clothing, furniture, accessories, and jewellery.
