Things to do
HISTORY
Rhodes Town’s hotchpotch of building styles tell of a city where east meets west. The Archaeological Museum is the place to learn about life in ancient Rhodes, with artefacts from around the island. You could lose yourself in the cobbled lanes of the Knight’s Quarter – a perfectly preserved image of life in the 15th century. Or explore Hora, where many churches were converted into mosques during Ottoman rule. Here you can still find traditional hammams, dating back almost 500 years.
ART & CULTURE
Walk in the footsteps of kings at the Palace of the Grand Masters. Built in the 14th century, this magnificent castle is now a museum. It’s here you can see sculptures and mosaics from around the island. But Rhodes Town isn’t just about history. It’s also home to the Museum of Modern Greek Art and a wealth of stylish bars and music clubs.
SHOPPING
The labyrinthine streets of the old town are a treasure trove of local markets, antiques galleries and artisan workshops. This is the place to pick out a pair of traditional, hand crafted leather sandals. Or original paintings inspired by Byzantine icons. If you’re in search of a designer shopping fix, head to the new town. Here you’ll find high-end boutiques and exclusive department stores stocking many top names.
