SKIING
The Aosta Valley caters for all skiing and snowboarding levels. Overlooked by Mont Blanc, Courmayeur offers 62 miles of pristine off-piste routes as well as traditional runs in every colour and altitude, including the Vallée Blanche glacier that stretches across to Chamonix on the French side. Learners can join one of the many official ski schools, while daredevil types should head up to Cervinia and board a heliski helicopter. Exclusively for experienced skiers – this service drops you off on freshly powdered isolated peaks, before following your descent to the valley below.
WATER
The Valle D’Aosta is awash with stunning mountain lakes and rivers. 1,981 metres up at the magical Blue Lake of Cervinia you have the famous Saint Vincent mineral spring. First discovered in 1770, and originally called Fons Salutis, it’s now a luxurious spa complex, thanks to the renowned healing properties of its thermal waters. Relax in indoor pools, where temperatures range from 25 to 34°C, and a deeply soothing 36°C in the pools outside. There are also Finnish and Mediterranean-style saunas, steam baths, ice cascades and expert treatments – all framed by restorative views of the trees and mountains.
HISTORY
Conquered in 25 BC by the Romans, well-preserved reminders of Aosta’s past are everywhere. Overground is the Praetorian Gate, Arch of Augustus and majestic Roman theatre ruins. Beneath the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta lies the secret hidden gem of Forensic Cryptoporticus – the heart of this once great Roman city, with its underground arcades and gleaming travertine arches. Fast-forward to the Middle Ages and visit the Paleochristian Church of San Lorenzo and 13th-century Bramafam Tower. While further away, surrounded by dense forest, the charming Medieval town of Fontainemore comes into view.
