Introducing Riga

As the capital of Latvia, Riga has the largest concentration of German Art Nouveau architecture in the world. Following bombardment in World War II, the city has recently been restored and its distinct looks and vibrant nightlife now make it an extremely popular destination for lovers of city breaks.

Things to do

The central market is a fascinating hotchpotch of sights and sounds. You can pick up pieces of amber, jewellery or knitware at very affordable prices. Also worth visiting is Taste Latvia, a department store focusing on everything that’s typically Latvian.

There are so many distinctive buildings and monuments that one of the best ways to see Riga is by a private tour. You can explore by foot in one particular area, such as the Old Town, or take a bike or even a Segway tour across the city.

People from across Europe come to party in Riga, and its stylish bars tend to stay open longer. You might even find an international DJ working the turntables. And there’s a noticeable difference between Russian and Latvian nightclubs.

Top Tip from SLH

Latvians are proud of their heritage and one way to see their authentic, traditional way of life is to visit the Ethnographic Open Air Museum.
