Long before entering the realm of Harry Potter – and before it became a James Bond film set – Grindelwald was known as the quintessential Alpine village. In winter it’s criss-crossed with ski runs and gondolas, before transforming into hiking territory each spring. And though small, it boasts a dramatic setting, with snowscapes and glaciers set below the commanding north face of the Eiger – a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
NATURE
Putting you at cloud level, the First Cliff Walk brings you to the summit of Grindelwald’s Schwarzhorn mountain. Take a deep breath and step onto the metal walkway that winds round the sheer side of the peaks. Viewing platforms look over the void for incredible photo opportunities, and on a clear day you’ll see a waterfall dropping into the valley. You could hike on from the gondola to Bachalpsee – a mirror-like lake that could be the poster boy for this region.
SKI
Grindelwald has ski country written all over it. This part of the world-famous Jungfrau region suits everyone from seasoned pros to first-timers, with sledding and snow-tubing perfect for families. Experienced skiers can enjoy themselves on the slopes that lead into Wengen. And though this is a heritage ski resort, the modern cableways bring it firmly up to date.
EXPERIENCES
Running since 1912 and among the highest tracks in the world, a trip on the Jungfrau Railway is an exhilarating experience. Riding almost 3,500 metres high, you’ll be surrounded by mountain-tops with awe-inspiring views of the Aletsch Glacier – especially from the Sphinx Observatory. For a fresh perspective on the mountains, step into Gletscherschlucht where walkways (and a thrilling over-water ‘web’ net) take you deep into the atmospheric marbled ravine.
Ask your hotel about bicycle hire. Many of the aerial gondolas, railways and cable-cars in Grindelwald will now carry bikes – and cycling the movie-set landscapes is stunning.
