Things to do
HISTORY
County Durham has a rich history, stretching from medieval seat of learning to industrial powerhouse. Durham’s impressive Norman cathedral is the county’s most famous landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, housing the shrine of St Cuthbert that’s rumoured to have healing powers. Pay a visit to Bishop Auckland and explore Auckland Castle – a grand palace that was home to the powerful Bishop Princes of Durham for hundreds of years. Or you could step back in time to discover the lives of Victorian families at Killhope mining museum – and even tour the mines themselves.
NATURE
Your luxury boutique hotel is well placed for exploring more of the countryside. Head to Teesdale and Weardale to walk or cycle through the rolling moors and river valleys of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Or follow a peaceful woodland trail towards the spectacular sight of High Force, England’s tallest waterfall, that cascades into a plunge pool.
SPORTS
The moors and forests of County Durham offer plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventures. Test your nerve on exhilarating high ropes courses at Beamish Wild Treetop Adventure. Try your hand at clay pigeon shooting and archery at the North East Outdoor Pursuits Centre. Or you could spend the day honing your swing at one of the county’s many fine golf courses.
