Things to Do
NATURE
Pack your binoculars and head to Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, an exceptional coastal wetland habitat, spanning more than 600 football pitches in size. Settle in with ringside seats to an ever changing cast of rare birds and beautiful salt marsh botany. Or pack a picnic lunch and wander the peaceful forests and rolling hills of the neighbouring countryside, exploring ancient sunken hollow ways and breathtaking bluebell woods.
HISTORY
Every winding lane and cobbled corner of Rye tells a story. Set in “1066 country,” the town is steeped in thrilling history, spanning Norman raids, notorious smuggling gangs and fleeing Huguenots. Be sure to make your way up Mermaid Street, a wonderful jumble of timber-framed buildings and quaint shops, stopping for a drink at the Mermaid Inn (historic watering hole of the aforementioned smugglers). Climb the ramparts of Tudor coastal defence, Camber Castle. Or walk in the footsteps of Henry James at Lamb House.
CAMBER SANDS
The golden jewel crowning Rye’s beautiful landscape, Camber Sands conjures huge horizons, undulating dunes and endless windswept romance. Standing out from its neighbouring stone and shingle beaches, Camber Sands is a popular destination for families, walkers and swimmers alike. Wander through the marram grass, watch the daredevil acrobatics of kitesurfers and explore the remains of a historic shipwreck at low tide. Visit early in the morning for the most peaceful experience.
