Wrapped up within tenderly nurtured gardens filled with over 2,500 native plants and centenary-old trees, Capitolo Riviera is committed to preserving the natural beauty of Liguria’s coast and countryside. The plastic-free property installed a 40kw photovoltaic panels to produce solar electricity throughout, and has extensive recycling and rainwater recovery systems in place. The building was sensitively renovated using eco-friendly materials such as stone, wood, and natural resin, and the restaurant’s botanical-inspired dishes are garnished with garden-grown herbs. There are charging stations for electric vehicles in the hotel’s car park, bicycles to rent, and scenic public transport options including the Genova-Casella train and funicular railways.

Cultural Custodians

Celebrating Genoa’s longstanding artistic heritage, Capitolo Riviera displays works from Vivioli, a family-run Genoese antique dealer specialising in 18th century pieces from the Belle Époque era. The hotel also runs a permanent exhibition in collaboration with Satura gallery, showcasing the paintings of Genoese artist, Emilio Scanavino. Guided tours of Genoa’s UNESCO-listed centre can be organised on request, alongside visits to local artisan workshops and slate factories, plus boat tours along the Ligurian coast which dive into the region’s rich maritime history and fishing traditions. The hotel’s chef is on hand for traditional cooking classes, showing guests how to make Ligurian ‘pasta fresca’ and local recipes.

Community Minded

Residents are at the heart of the team, making up the entirety of Captiolo Riviera’s staff, while students from local schools are offered internships and training opportunities at the hotel. In addition to hiring locally, the hotel’s restaurant sources jams, honey, olive oil, eggs, wine, and lemonade from small Ligurian suppliers, and sustainably caught fish brought straight off local boats. You’re welcomed with olive pâté and focaccia in the rooms, and can visit a local eco-farm and beehive to learn more about the produce. Join local foragers on a nature trek between Sant Ilario and Monte Moro, picking local herbs as you walk to add to a refreshing infusion after the hike. The hotel also works with local guides to take guests to sample street food along the Antica Sciamadda.
