137 Pillars House

A historic building set in stunning gardens in Old Chiang Mai

Built in the 1880's as part of the East Borneo Company headquarters, 137 Pillars House is a beautiful teak wood building that has been carefully restored to reflect its 19th-century origins. With 30 beautiful suites, gourmet dining, a swimming pool, library and an array of spa treatments, this place has a warm and relaxing ambiance.

The undoubted air of sophistication at 137 Pillars House is in part due to the interplay between the nostalgic design and décor and the modern comforts of a contemporary hotel. Each of the generously-sized suites has a veranda or patio overlooking the stunning gardens.

137 Pillars House Environment

Environmentally Conscious

The dedicated green team at 137 Pillars House keeps sustainability at the forefront of the hotel’s operations, from recycling to locally sourced ingredients (mostly from the nearby farmers’ market). The property is plastic-free wherever possible, offering in-room rattan bags to take shopping, and woven recyclable containers for on-the-go food and drink. The hotel composts garden waste into biochar – a natural mosquito repellent (no need for nasty chemicals) and contributes towards ongoing tree planting projects in Ratchaburi. Monthly donations are also made to the Elephant Nature Park, an ethical wildlife rescue and rehabilitation sanctuary in Chiang Mai.

137 Pillars Culture

Cultural Custodians

The teak house which forms the heart of the hotel was built in 1889 and meticulously restored with guidance from Thailand’s historic society – thereby preserving an important Chiang Mai landmark. Over the years, the hotel gathered archival photographs which shed light on the history of the Borneo Company, which led to the opening of an on-property museum exploring the importance of the teak industry. The hotel also contributes towards the ongoing maintenance of nearby Wat Ket temple, which displays ancient Lanna artefacts in its museum, as well as offering zero-emission samlor tours to Chiang Mai’s culturally significant sites. Guests can learn traditional crafts such as pottery, painting, and weaving during workshops with local artisans.

137 Pillars House Community

Community Minded

By supplying towels, bedding, and sports kit alongside providing meals to over 700 orphans at Wat Don Chan each quarter, the hotel hopes to create a brighter future for those in need. Working closely with The Foundation for the Education of Rural Children, 137 Pillars House also raises funds for students from low-income families, ensuring they have the means to pursue further education or training. Additionally, the hotel fundraises on behalf of a local School for the Blind to purchase educational materials for visually impaired children. Handmade items in the hotel’s boutique are sourced from Sop Moei Arts, a local non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting the weaving community of the Karen tribe in Chiang Mai’s mountains.

Service here was outstanding, and such a unique place to spend your vacation.

The pool was one of the most gorgeous ones I've seen in a long while. It had a gorgeous full-on plant wall feature. The green hues reflected in the pool water was mesmerizing.
