A gem sparkling with music, art and hospitality, wrapped in mountain scenery

Welcome to the beating heart of Rwanda. Putting you just a couple of hours from countless national parks and natural wonders, Kigali is an ideal place from which to explore. But it’s far from just a launchpad: stroll down from the hilltops towards a vibrant city centre where you’ll find galleries, fashion houses and contemporary coffee shops. Kigali may be small, but it makes a big impression.

Things to do

NATURE
A drive of just 2-3 hours takes you from bustling Kigali to the mist-draped forests of Volcanoes National Park. Lace up your walking boots to join an unforgettable hike to see some of Rwanda’s most famous inhabitants: mountain gorillas. If you’re here in September, don’t miss the gorilla naming ceremony, Kwita Izina. This joyful celebration is packed with traditional performances, conservation talks and festivities celebrating the year’s new arrivals.

ART
Kigali is a hub for Rwanda’s dynamic arts and cultural scene. Visit Inshuti Art Centre to view socially conscious works from artists from Rwanda and beyond. Or visit trailblazing fashion house Haute Baso to order a bespoke dress or tailored suit. To get closer to historic crafts, book a tour to visit rural cooperatives producing beautiful fabrics and homeware, including traditional woven baskets.

EVENTS
Each year on 7th April, Kigali hosts the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Rwandan Genocide, a poignant time of reflection, remembrance and healing. Rwandans are internationally recognised for their resilience and dedication to building unity, with events including the Ubumuntu Arts Festival. Other festivals that fill Kigali with energy include Hobe Rwanda music festival and Kigali UP, which features local and international reggae, hip hop and blues acts.
