Things to do
WINERIES
Travel the valley in style on the famous Franschhoek Wine Tram, hopping on and off to sip complex, barrel-aged Chenin Blanc, fresh, crisp Sauvignons and bold, structured reds. Most wineries offer wine-and-cuisine experiences, and many have more to explore beyond their cellars. Wander Babylonstoren Estate’s beautiful gardens, or pay a visit to Leeu Estate’s tranquil spa. The valley is very walkable, but cycling is a brilliant (and practical) way to travel between wineries while taking in the scenery. Join a guided tour, or hire a bike and plot your own course using the wine map.
DINING
Welcome to gastronomic heaven. From exquisite tasting menus with wine pairings to artisan coffee shops and delis serving grab-and-go treats, the food scene in Franschhoek is ripe with temptation. Much of the fine dining here takes inspiration from the town’s French heritage (Franschhoek translates to ‘French corner’), with Le Petit Colombe serving up edible artistry, and many bistro-style restaurants to be discovered. The Saturday market is a hub for street food, craft sundries and baked goods, while estates often put on special dining and seasonal events. Some even offer picnics to enjoy at your leisure in a quiet corner of the valley.
CULTURE
Beyond wine and food, Franschhoek also offers a feast for the eyes thanks to its thriving art scene. The Everard Read Gallery specialises in contemporary South African works, while the Grand Provence Gallery has a beautiful sculpture garden. The Huguenot Museum explains the valley’s French-settler history, and the Motor Museum is a tour of automotive royalty. There’s a steady parade of photography, film, music and art festivals throughout the year, and at harvest time some estates throw open an invitation to take part in their traditional grape stomping sessions.
