The jewel of Jamaica: Montego Bay shimmers with culture, history and sun-kissed sand

Known as MoBay to locals and visitors alike, this is a city that moves to the rhythm of reggae. Colourful Rastafari culture permeates life here, while historic estates stand as reminders of Jamaica’s tumultuous past. You can have adventures on land or water, or simply kick back, rum punch in hand. It’s all set to a backdrop of vivid blue skies and the epically clear Caribbean Sea.

Things to do

BEACHES
Some of Montego Bay’s beaches are attached to big hotels and charge entry fees – but this is Jamaica – so there’s still plenty of sand to go round. Doctor’s Cave Beach is the bay’s best known. It’s icing sugar soft with the kind of clear water you can only find in the Caribbean, and has sunbeds to rent, shops and bars. Locals head to Dead End Beach to relax and spot planes landing at the nearby airport. While Harmony Beach Park is great for sunset-watching and strolling.

ADVENTURE
Much of Montego Bay’s fun takes place on water. Discover the island’s northern coast by chartering a private yacht or catamaran to seek out hidden coves, and snorkel uncrowded reefs. For something completely different and just as memorable, drift down the Martha Brae River on a hand-crafted bamboo raft as the sun rises and the rainforest around you comes to life. And don’t miss the Luminous Lagoon at night time – slip into the water under dark skies and the glowing bioluminescence will make you feel like you’re swimming in starlight.

CULTURE
In the hills just outside the city, Rastafari Indigenous Village immerses you into the Rastafari way of life. It’s a living community – so you’ll experience everyday pastimes and spiritual practices through small-group sessions on drumming, herbal healing, traditional cooking and crafts. Jamaica’s history is fascinating, but complicated. Rose Hall Great House, a former colonial mansion that’s a short drive from Montego Bay, and Georgian-era Sam Sharpe Square in the city, both tell a part of the island’s story.
