Sky-skimming adventures meet coffee culture in the cloud forest

Ethereal. Mist-shrouded. Unique. A cradle of life for some of the planet’s rarest creatures, the cloud forest of Monteverde offers unforgettable experiences. Here you can soar through the tree canopy on a zip line, spot elusive animals, and immerse yourself into an ecosystem that feels like another world.

Things to do

NATURE
Arguably Costa Rica’s crowning natural glory, Monteverde’s miles of pristine cloud forest are home to thousands of plant and animal species. A guided walking tour is the best way to seek out some of its most famous inhabitants – from two-toed sloths to miniature orchids and the resplendent (but shy) quetzal. Head out after dark to explore a nocturnal wonderland, as creatures venture forth and the forests come to life.

ACTIVITIES
Take the pace up a notch at one of Monteverde’s adventure parks. You’ll see the canopy from a birds-eye view via zip lines, hammock bridges, and Tarzan swings. Try the aptly named ‘Superman’ for a feeling that’s the closest you’ll get to flying. With 90% of the park’s biodiversity found at treetop level, tread the 1.7 miles of the Sky Walk’s suspension bridges and trails to soak up the sights and sounds at your own speed.

FOOD & DRINK
From bean to cup, dive into Monteverde’s world-renowned coffee growing culture at one of its farms or roasteries. Pick the cherry red beans yourself before learning about the drying and roasting processes, and finally taste a cup (or several) of the good stuff. Some farms also offer sugar cane and chocolate tours – perfect for little ones, as well as those with a sweet tooth.

Top Tip from SLH

Thrill-seekers look no further. Monteverde is home to the highest bungee jump in Central America, boasting 143 metres of free fall.
