Environmentally Conscious

The family behind some of Costa Rica’s first eco-lodges are continuing their environmental efforts with Senda Monteverde, a plastic-free, solar-powered retreat set on the edge of the Aguti Wildlife Reserve. The hotel covers guest entrance fees to its neighbouring biodiverse park and contributes towards the conservation of this rare cloud forest through ongoing reforestation schemes (with over 5,500 native species planted onsite to date). Local botanist Willow Zuchowski developed the gardens and greenhouse, which supply the hotel’s restaurant with homegrown produce alongside sustainably caught seafood through the dock-to-dish programme which supports local fishermen. You can learn more about the rainwater harvesting, electric car services, and meticulous recycling centre by joining one of the back-of-house sustainability tours.

Cultural Custodians

Within five minutes’ walk from Senda Monteverde is the town of Santa Elena, home to locally owned coffee and ice-cream shops, cheese factory, and CASEM store and workshop — a non-profit artisan cooperative dedicated to enhancing the economic and social wellbeing of local women artists. The hotel organises visits for guests to meet these artisans and learn about their crafts, as well as purchase traditional wall hangings, woodcarvings, ceramics and more. The hotel makes and repairs furniture in its woodshop, while drawing inspiration from indigenous designs. You can also get a taste for Monteverde music and dance during the hotel’s themed dinners or try your hand at making sweet sugar cane juice or ceviche in a cooking class..

Community Minded

Every staff member at Senda Monteverde calls Costa Rica home, and most of the team was born and raised within walking distance of the hotel. There are ongoing training opportunities within the hotel and hospitality internship programmes in collaboration with local schools, with a bi-annual entrepreneur fair held at the hotel as a showcase for local businesses (some of the locally made products are also available to buy in Senda’s boutique). The hotel partners with Monteverde Forest Clean Up, a group of young locals dedicated to keeping the surrounding forests pristine, while purchasing local wherever possible. This includes local drinks and snacks in the minibars, and refillable bathroom products made near Monteverde.

Combining thrills with breathtaking scenery, a treetop tour guarantees the best views with a rush of adrenalin. For a state-of-the art course, head for Selvatura. Soar superman style or try the Tarzan Swing. Adventure seekers will be flying high for hours afterwards.

Explore hidden worlds

After dark the forest morphs into a different creature altogether, so grab a flashlight and follow your guide into a nocturnal wonderland. Peering back at you, you may find frogs, kinkajous and other wide-eyed creatures. Listen out for roaring jaguars, spot katydids disguised as leaves, and admire the symphony of the cloud forest at night.
