Beaches, mountains and culture old and new – Oaxaca has something for everyone

Oaxaca’s dramatic Pacific coastline, incredible ancient ruins and thriving eco-tourism make it an all-round destination for travellers seeking sun, culture and a little bit of adventure. Head south for laid-back beach towns and surf breaks, then make your way northwards to explore cloud forests, mountain trails and the colourful streets of Oaxaca City.

Things to do

BEACHES
Boasting pristine beaches and world-renowned surf, Oaxaca’s coastal gems range from chic resorts to off-the-beaten-track villages. Eco-tourism is also a major draw, with turtle conservation centres in Mazunte offering unique, hands-on experiences, while the calm shores of Huatulco are ideal for snorkelling and underwater exploration. Big wave surfers head to Zicatela Beach, but Puerto Escondido has conditions for all levels of experience – La Punta is a popular spot for beginners.

HISTORY
While most head to Tulum for their fix of Mexico’s ruins, Monte Albán has just as much history, but fewer crowds. Just a few miles outside of Oaxaca City, it’s one of the most important and impressive archaeological sites in the country. The pre-Hispanic heart of the Zapotec civilization for over a thousand years, its ancient, stepped pyramids and hewed monuments span a sweeping plateau. The on-site museum helps brings things to life through exhibits of pottery, jewellery, and funerary items.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE
If biodiverse forests, magnificent hiking trails and stunning mountain views can’t convince you to leave the beach behind for a day, then fear not – Oaxaca has an ace up its sleeve. Hierve el Agua’s unique calcified waterfall is something to behold. Follow a trail past towering agave stalks and sweeping vistas to this impressive, petrified monument, then soak away your cares in a balmy spring-fed pool as you absorb the scenery.
