Sun, sea and kitesurfing on Brazil’s wind swept and wonderful northeast coast

Prea in Brazil is almost synonymous with one sport: kitesurfing. With an uninterrupted 15-mile coastline and perfect wind conditions, this region attracts beginners and experts alike. You’ll also find plenty of ways to take it easy – from boat trips and snorkelling, to savouring just-caught seafood at lively beach bars.

Things to do

SPORT
Look out to sea at any beach around Prea and you’re likely to see jewel bright parafoils dotting the skyline. On the surface of the water below, kite surfers glide back and forth over the waves as they catch the next exhilarating downwind. Try an evening session to kitesurf against a photo-worthy sunset backdrop.

NATURE
As well as the endless beaches, Prea is home to rolling sand dunes – including the towering Morro do Careca for panoramic views of the coastline. Nearby you’ll find Jericoacoara National Park, with winding waterways lined with greenery and lagoons that are visited by sea turtles.

FOOD & DRINK
It’s no surprise that seafood is a mainstay of the cuisine of Brazil’s northeast coastline. Prea is in the province of Ceará, where indigenous south American food traditions mingle with African flavours. Look out for moqueca Cearanese, an aromatic fish stew, or Baião de Dois – a hearty, down-to-earth dish based on rice and beans.
