Founded by the Spanish in 1541, Santiago’s Latin roots run deep, and can be uncovered in museums and historic sites across the city. Or simply meander the streets dotted with neoclassical architecture, from the Cathedral Metropolotana to the Teatro Municipal.

For such a busy city, Santiago has some world-class parks. For awe-inspiring views of the snow-capped Andes, head to Santiago’s largest green space, Parque Metropolitano (more commonly known as Cerro San Cristóbal). Zip around by cable car to cover all the main attractions – which include a zoo and botanical garden.
ART
While it may not have the heritage of Florence, Santiago’s art scene is fast-becoming one of this city’s highlights. Hire a bike and cycle through neighbourhoods like Barrio Yungay, taking in the vibrant, political street art. Art lovers mustn’t miss a trip to Centro Gabriela Mistral, a striking cultural and performing arts centre. Swing by to see an exhibit or catch one of the (almost-daily) concerts or performances. Or, to take some art home, browse the galleries and craft shops in Bellavista, Santiago’s bohemian barrio.
