Things to do

NATURE
Spread along the La Jolla coast is the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve – home to America’s rarest conifer. Follow the Beach Trail from the top of the sandstone cliffs, passing carpets of wildflowers and native succulents. Swim in the protected calm waters of La Jolla Cove among colourful garibaldi fish, rays and yellowtail sharks. You can also sail into seven ocean-carved caves.

CULTURE
La Jolla’s thriving cultural scene reflects its vibrant landscape and community. Browse your way around locally-owned galleries dotted along the Village Art Walk. Enjoy a free afternoon concert in the fresh sea air at the Park at the Cove. The La Jolla Playhouse is also renowned for its award-winning productions.

BEACHES
The warm waters surrounding Windansea Beach, the Cove and mile-long crescent of golden sand at La Jolla Shores attract everyone from swimmers and snorkelers to scuba divers and surfers. If you’re sticking to the shore, keep your camera at the ready for migrating whales. If you’ve found a spot at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, you’ll soon see why this area is known as ‘Leopard Shark City’ – as thousands of these harmless creatures join the throng of fish and sea turtles.

Top Tip from SLH

The Children’s Pool near Scripps Park was built in the 1930s for families – but it’s now a hotspot for frolicking seals and sea lions.
