Things to do
NATURE
South Carolina’s varied geography and climate gives it beautiful scenery year round. From the Appalachian Mountains to the islands, you could find yourself hiking over hills and through forests one day, only to be swimming in the warm surf off Hilton Head the next. There are beautiful wetlands, lakes and nature reserves throughout the state. Even in colonial Charleston, the picturesque avenues are lined with giant oak trees hanging with Spanish moss.
FOOD & DRINK
No visit to South Carolina is complete without sampling some of the region’s best food. With a burgeoning restaurant culture drawing top chefs and foodies to Charleston, you’ll want to sample soul food favourites and fresh seafood. Tuck into local oysters and clams, fried quail and roasted okra, or succulent southern barbecue with collard greens. After a night out on the town, breakfast on grits with shrimp washed down with a Bloody Mary.
SPORTS
A round or two on some of America’s most pristine golf courses is not to be missed when in the Palmetto State. With over 300 to choose from, in South Carolina you could find yourself teeing off along coastal links or making your way around Jack Nicklaus designed holes in the mountains. And of course, South Carolina is home to Kiawah Island, which has hosted several PGA Championships on its three stunning courses. For a golf escape, this is the place to be.
