Where rivers wind past wild countryside and vibrant cities, overlooked by Himalayan heights

Assam conjures images of steam drifting from a cup of freshly brewed, fragrant tea. The region itself is just as refreshing, with an endless variety of natural and cultural wonders in which to immerse yourself. Go from cosmopolitan Guwahati to hilltop temples in Hajo. Cruise along the Brahmaputra River, the mist clearing over the water. Or walk on the wild side in some of India’s finest national parks.

Things to do

HISTORY & CULTURE
Assam is world famous for its tea, and the lowlands are dotted with emerald-green tea estates. Pay a visit to Gopal Krishna estate to view the gardens and learn more about this historic industry. Or spend time getting to know the region’s temples. Kamakhya in Guwahati draws visitors with its intricate architecture. Over in Hajo, Hayagriva Madhava Buddhist temple pairs beautiful shrines with serene lakeside views.

NATURE
The Brahmaputra River winds its way through Assam, feeding lush landscapes that have become protected national parks and nature reserves. Kaziranga is famed for its large population of Indian rhinos, but you’ll also have the chance to see them in quieter reserves such as Pobitura Wildlife Sanctuary. Bring binoculars for birdwatching and if taking a cruise on the river, you may spot dolphins, too.

EVENTS
With rich cultural and religious traditions all mixing and mingling together, it’s no surprise Assam boasts a busy festival calendar. Among the most popular is Bihu, a three-part harvest festival happening in January, April and October. Communities throughout Assam celebrate with feasts, bonfires, music and folk-dance performances. If you’re visiting in winter, you might catch Jonbeel Mela festival – a celebration of traditional food and crafts.
