Sake, onsens and volcanic views in Mount Fuji’s magnificent home

Japan doesn’t get much more visually iconic than Shizuoka. Home to the symbolic and celebrated Mount Fuji, the area is one of striking natural beauty – from deep green forests and lush tea fields, to mountain landscapes that cascade all the way down to the big blue. Hot springs, picture-perfect coastlines and vibrant wildlife are just a few of the things that keep this region at the top of so many bucket lists.

Things to do

NATURE
Shizuoka’s unique mix of coastline, mountains and forest make it a haven for diverse wildlife. Watch as fireflies illuminate the riverside villages at dusk, or hear the tree frogs sing in the tea fields. Meanwhile sika deer and macaques roam the forests and mountains. Izu Peninsula is famous for its sea life – with sea turtles, corals and bright fish enchanting divers. Suruga Bay is also home to the vast Japanese spider crab, sea sharks and squid.

SPA
Take advantage of Shizuoka’s geothermal location with a visit to an onsen – a natural hot spring bath that’s used for relaxing and regenerating. A tradition that goes back thousands of years, onsen bathing is believed to have medicinal benefits from the hot, mineral-rich waters (usually between 40 and 45°C). Onsen can be indoors or out, and Shizuoka has some of the country’s best – with unique spring waters and stunning mountain views.

LOCAL CUSTOMS
The green tea capital of Japan, Shizuoka is renowned for its distinctive and sought-after tea. The volcanic soil south of Mount Fuji and weaving rivers make it the perfect environment for tea plantations – which are abundant throughout the region. Tours and tastings are popular, often including tea picking and blending – as well as the opportunity to immerse yourself in Japanese culture with a tea ceremony.

Top Tip from SLH

When choosing an onsen, be mindful of the etiquette – some allow bathing suits while others do not. Keep an eye out for signs, which often have pictures explaining what to do.
