Things to do

CULTURE
You quite literally can’t miss Faisal Mosque – it’s the largest in South Asia. Its tent-like structure and enormous courtyard can hold over 100,000 worshippers. Non-Muslims are welcome to visit outside of prayer times – just be sure to follow the dress codes. The striking granite ‘petals’ of Pakistan Monument symbolise the country’s struggle for independence and unity, while its museum offers a deep dive into its fascinating story. Nestled at the base of the Margalla Hills, Saidpur Village is a heritage site that showcases traditional Pakistani culture – check out the temples and tombs before tasting some of the rich flavours in its restaurants.

NATURE
Thrumming with bird species and home to the elusive leopard, Margalla Hills’ snow-capped peaks make a particularly picturesque urban backdrop. Enjoy its trails, stopping off at Daman-e-Koh, a perfect spot for sweeping vistas and monkey sightings. Go boating, fishing or picnicking at Rawal Lake, a shimmering water reservoir in the city’s centre. Or make the short trip to Shahdara Valley’s clear streams. Parks, green spaces and tree-lined boulevards dot Islamabad – head to the Rose and Jasmine Garden in the blooming season for a burst of vibrant scents and colours.

SHOPPING
Modern malls meet traditional markets in Islamabad. Enormous Safa Gold Mall will satisfy label-lovers, with high-end boutiques and upscale dining. The Centaurus and Giga Malls both bring together a huge range of brands, cinemas and food courts. For a more authentic experience, try Itwar Bazaar or Jinnah Market to pick up handicrafts such as beautifully embroidered textiles, painted ceramics and peshawari chappals – handmade leather sandals.
