Things to do
CULTURE
You can barely move for ancient – and wonder-inspiring – monuments in Hue. A great way to see its highlights is by bicycle, weaving through country lanes and whizzing down pine-clad hills. The vast, ornate Imperial Citadel, where the Nguyen Dynasty once ruled, tops the list. But don’t miss Tu Hieu Pagoda, former home of a Zen master. Pay tribute to the past and offer prayers for the future at the altar of Khai Dinh Mausoleum. And pause for a moment of contemplation at Hon Chen Temple, a sacred site on the banks of the Perfume River. For a taste of tradition brought firmly into the present, head to Da Khe craft village and its surroundings to see – and bring home – bamboo handicrafts, incense sticks and bronze casts.
NATURE
Lush rainforest. Crashing waterfalls. Pinch-yourself panoramas. Bach Ma National Park has it all – along with clear natural pools for a refreshing dip and, in spring, vibrantly blooming wild rhododendrons in shades of pink and red. A few kilometres from the city centre, serene Tam Giang Lagoon and nearby mangroves offer tranquil respite from the sights and sounds of Hue. Best enjoyed by boat, at sunset.
FOOD & DRINK
Hue City is as renowned for its big flavours as for its rich culture. From crispy shrimp and pork filled pancakes to delicate, melt-in-the-mouth rice cakes, and Bun Bo Hue, the city’s signature spicy beef noodle soup. Don’t forget to taste the city’s famous sweet soups, once served to the Nguyen royal family and a perfect end to any meal. Dong Ba market brings together all the local’s favourite dishes in a cacophony of colour and enticing aromas.
