Things to do
SPA
Daylesford’s mineral springs were first discovered during the Australian gold rush. From 1870 onwards the fashionable elite from nearby Melbourne came to take the health-giving waters. Today, you can still visit the very first spa to open in 1895, which is now part of the ultra-modern Hepburn Mineral Springs Reserve. Take a long, relaxing soak, or soothe mind and body with a massage.
FOOD & DRINK
The rolling, fertile countryside around Daylesford has sparked a strong gourmet scene based on fresh, seasonal produce. Try lakeside landmarks serving creative cuisine made from local ingredients. Or savour contemporary Australian dishes with a European twist. The region is also home to many family-run vineyards. Look out for tasting sessions to sample award-winning chardonnays and Macedon sparkling wines.
NATURE
A short journey from Daylesford takes you to Hanging Rock Reserve, the setting for Joan Lindsay’s famous novel, Picnic at Hanging Rock. The rock itself is actually a small volcano, carved into intriguing shapes by millions of years of wind and rain. Join a guided tour of the reserve to spot colourful plants and Australian wildlife, including koalas, echidna and wallabies.
