Unwind lakeside in Austria’s sunshine-cradle

Austria’s southern-most state is also one of its most beautiful. Glacier-carved valleys with soft green slopes cradle stunning blue waters. Cloud-skimming mountains reach out towards the sun. In summer these warming rays make the region’s many alpine lakes invitingly swimmable, while in winter the sunshine sets off a wonderland of sparkling snow.

Things to do

WATER
With over two hundred lakes and long, winding rivers, visitors to Carinthia are never far from an incredible panorama and the chance for an afternoon of fun. Diving, sailing, swimming, paddle-boarding, fishing – whether over or under the water, the region’s lakes will entertain and rejuvenate. Take the action up a level with white water kayaking, or simply find a tree-lined shore to enjoy a gentle stroll and admire the peace and scenery.

SPORTS

Carinthia’s hills and mountains invite exploration, whatever the season. Follow footpaths through wildflower meadows on a spring or summer hike. Admire autumn’s golden colours by bike, or set yourself a steeper challenge with a guided climbing course. Horse riding is an excellent way to tackle more miles than you can on foot, and the region has excellent golf courses too. In winter, world-class terrain and après ski bring the slopes to life.

CULTURE
Picture-perfect lakeside villages. Charming steepled churches. Hillside forts with ancient histories. Along with its stunning hills and valleys, Carinthia has a rich cultural landscape. In Klagenfurt, the area’s capital, explore 800-year-old streets and admire the town’s Italianate influence before indulging in some traditional Austrian coffee house culture. The city also houses a modern art museum, and has regular street markets. In the depths of December, enchanting Christmas markets light up the long nights.

Top Tip from SLH

The mountain-fed lakes of Carinthia make for excellent freshwater fishing. Try the delicate ‘Kärntner Lax’n’, a local specialty enjoyed in the region since the 14th century.
