Things to do
HISTORY
As the former seat of vast empires, Vienna has its fair share of dazzling historical monuments. Get a taste of the high life at Hofburg Imperial palace – an opulent window on life at the Habsburg royal court. Or visit the serene yet impressive St Stephen’s cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece with distinctive patterned roof tiles.
CULTURE
From Baroque to Gothic and Art Nouveau, cultural movements have all left their mark on Vienna. Visit the Klimt Museum to see the artist’s famous golden, decorated paintings. Of course, a city break in Vienna would not be complete without taking in some music. Get dressed up for a night at the Royal Opera House, or seek a more intimate evening listening to a chamber music ensemble.
FOOD & DRINK
Vienna’s gourmet scene owes as much to its growing international communities as to traditional Austrian cuisine, with many fine dining restaurants and bustling markets to choose from. The city is also renowned for its delicate pastries and indulgent cakes. So after a day out sightseeing, seek out a grand coffee house and sample a local speciality – light, flaky apfel strudel.
