A bustling port town where evenings are made for seafront strolls, Balchik is full of Black Sea charm

Balchik was once the favourite destination of Queen Marie of Romania, so much so that she built her summer palace there, with a stunning botanical garden to go with it. Its coastal charms are still going strong, thanks to its laid-back atmosphere, delightful dining scene and an array of seaside activities and beaches.

Things to do

GOLF
Balchik is fast becoming one of Europe’s top golfing destinations. There are three championship courses in the vicinity, two of which were designed by Gary Player. These 18-hole courses are hugely popular not just for how they play, but where they are located. Set on clifftops with stunning sea views, it’s easy to see why golfers flock here, whether new to the game or seasoned pros.

FOOD & DRINK
Authentic Black Sea cuisine focuses on fresh fish, grilled meats and local wines. Portions are hearty and hospitality is warm, especially in family-run spots. Seek out seafood for the best of the region, including fisherman’s stews, grilled mackerel and mussels in white wine. For on-the-go moments try Tutmanik, a traditional pastry with a flaky texture and delicious savoury cheese filling.

BEACHES
Hugged by white cliffs and blessed with golden sand, Balchik’s central town beach is sheltered and ideal for families, with more sandy shores and coves dotted along the coast. Balchik’s pretty waterfront promenade is lined with family-run restaurants, cafes and shops, and there’s a waterside market for souvenir shopping. Rent a bike, claim a sun lounger or relax in a taverna – the vibe is supremely laid back.

Top Tip from SLH

Take a trip along the coast to Cape Kaliakra fortress. Overlooking a marine nature reserve, it’s the perfect perch for dolphin spotting.
