Old money elegance meets breathtaking Croatian coastline

Things to do

LANDMARKS
The Lungomare, a 12-km seaside promenade, connects Opatija to nearby towns and showcases some of the area’s most breathtaking coastal scenes. Wander the corridors of Villa Angiolina, a stunning former summer residence set in manicured gardens which tells the story of Opatija’s past (and present) as a favourite destination for many famous figures. Finally, pay a visit to the town’s iconic statue, The Maiden and The Seagull, and join her as she gazes out across the sparkling waters of Kvarner Bay.

FOOD & DRINK
Opatija’s food and drink scene is a refined reflection of its coastal location. Seafood lovers will find themselves in paradise. Kvarner prawns are considered to be some of the best in the world — sweet, tender and often served raw in carpaccio. Istria (just inland) is one of the world’s great truffle hotspots, so expect to see this luxurious ingredient showcased on many menus, which will always place a strong emphasis on locally sourced, seasonal fare. If you’d like to try a local tipple, seek out rakija, a strong fruit brandy. Tradition dictates you must maintain eye contact while sipping it!

BEACHES
When it comes to beach days at Opatija, expect rocky coves with crystalline water over sandy stretches. Lido Beach is the most central, bringing a chic Mediterranean vibe – think rentable loungers, striped parasols and beachside bars with an endless supply of Aperol. For a quieter atmosphere, disappear to the tiny Angiolina Beach with your favourite book. Keen swimmers will find fabulous bathing at every turn, but Lipovica Beach is a gem when it comes to clear, calm waters.

Top Tip from SLH

Enjoy an alfresco breakfast of krostule (a delicate local pastry) with a cup of strong coffee as you gaze across the bay.
