A trip back in time – medieval villages, chateaus and gardens wrapped in rolling green countryside

Normandy is best known for its coast, giving its inland wonders such as Eure the feel of a well-kept secret. Instead of wind-swept beaches you’ll find rivers winding their way through gentle countryside, dotted with storybook chateaus. Drop into bustling towns, where medieval architecture sets the scene for browsing farmers markets or dining on local cuisine. Eure is a delight for all the senses.

Things to do

ART & CULTURE
Just an hour or two from Paris, it’s no surprise that rural Eure attracted great artists looking for a break from the city. It may be very popular, but Monet’s House and Garden at Giverny is well worth the crowd. Eure also features a year-round programme of festivals throughout its towns and cities. In May, visit historic landmarks by night during Pierre En Lumières. Or check out music festivals which range from chamber music in churches to metal in a castle.

HISTORY
Eure is full of historic landmarks that pay testament to its vital importance to both French and English medieval monarchs. Wander the atmospheric ruins of Richard the Lionheart’s castle at Chateau Gaillard. See how more everyday people lived by visiting historic towns such as Louviers, with its timber framed medieval buildings and gothic church. Or stop off in Vernon for a sighting of the iconic Old Mill – suspended over the water on the ruins of a centuries-old stone bridge.

FOOD & DRINK
Normandy is world-renowned for its regional specialities, and Eure makes a wonderful base from which to try them. Dive into markets in villages such as Verneuil, with stalls piled high with farm fresh vegetables, indulgent Normandy cheeses such as camembert and Pont-l’Évêque, or scallops from the coast. It’s also here that you’ll find producers of heady Calvados and sparkling Cidre. Raise a glass to a luxurious escape, well planned.
