1 HOTEL IN Propriano

Introducing Propriano

Traditional fishing boats bob beside luxury yachts in the marina, and streets are lined with centuries-old churches and modern boutique hotels. Propriano is the place to discover island life, now and then. You could start the day in a local café before making the best of the afternoon sun at the beach. Or swap shimmering seas for spa waters at the Baracci or Caldane thermal baths – a favourite since Roman times. To step even further back in time, seek out the ancient standing stones in the countryside near Propriano.

Things to do

Whether you like long, bustling stretches of sand or get-away-from-it-all coves, Propriano is a beach-lover’s paradise. Relax beside the ocean on quiet Sampieru or lively Plage du Lido. Or take to the water on a sailing boat, snorkel and fins at the ready. A little further afield, Campomoro boasts a pretty golden beach looked over by an old Genoese watchtower.

Around thirty minutes outside Propriano is Filitosa. The ruins that pepper the land here are 8,000 years old and tell a fascinating tale of ancient island life. There are Torréen monuments and Menhir sculptures to peruse, as well as ceramic artefacts and weapons excavated over the years. If there’s time, head out the next day and venture south of Propriano. Here you can stroll around the mysterious standing stones at Cauria.

Fringed by beautiful blue seas, it’s little surprise Propriano is a hub for watersports. You could learn to sail or kayak along the coast, stopping to explore hidden bays. Play James Bond and hire a speedboat. Or don some scuba gear and escape beneath the surface – the clear, calm waters make this an excellent place for diving. Inland, the region’s rivers have become popular swimming spots.

Top Tip from SLH

Mix beach-based relaxation with something a little more exhilarating and head for the hills bordering Propriano. Dotted with rock pools and waterfalls, they’re ideal for sports such as canyoning.
