Introducing Baden-Baden

You could say Baden-Baden is Germany’s southern belle. Its leafy streets are lined with grand villas. There are elegant boutiques and cafés in which to while away an hour or two. And, of course, the palatial 19th-century thermal baths – steaming, stylish, and effortlessly sophisticated.

Things to do

If it’s relaxation you’re after, you’ve come to the right place. Head to Friedrichsbad – a temple of wellness where you can slip into the steaming spa waters and follow Roman rituals in the most refined of settings. For something a little more contemporary, Caracalla Therme won’t disappoint. Its collection of pools, saunas and grottos are wrapped up in a chic glass-fronted building.

Baden-Baden’s mountainous backdrop just begs to be explored. Hire a car, bike or book a private tour into the enchanting ‘Schwarzwald’ – the Black Forest. You’ll find undulating hills and thick woodland, peppered with storybook hamlets. This was where the Hansel and Gretel fairytale was born.

For a touch of old-world glamour, spend an evening at the Kurhaus casino. Even if roulette isn’t your thing, the opulent red and gold interior is enough to capture your attention. There’s a strict dress code, but men can hire a jacket and tie if you’ve forgotten to pack them.
