With its beautiful riverbank setting there’s plenty to discover in what used to be a proud coal mining area. Leave the bustling Ruhr metropolis behind as you stroll into the Old Town – quietly cosy with wooden framed houses nestled between small alleyways. Or cycle to some extraordinary museums located along the river known as Mülheim’s Museum Mile.

LANDMARKS
Places of interest are dotted all over the Ruhr Valley. Worth a visit is the Bismarck-Tower, which opened in 1908 to honour Otto von Bismarck First. Watergate Island is seen as a historic ‘entry door’ to Rhine-Ruhr and reminder of the area’s industrial past. You could also visit Mülheim’s open-air-theatre – its 2,000 seats make it one of the largest of its kind in Germany.

Kids will love piling into a boat based on an original Viking ship and rowing along one of the nicest parts of the river between Essen-Kettiwg and Mülheim Water Station. Or simply enjoy quality time together in MüGa-Park – 66 hectares of parkland, playgrounds, and gardens with quiet spaces to escape to and art works to enjoy.
