Not many towns are as sublimely located as this. In the heart of the Dolomites sits a green plateau, and in the heart of that plateau nestles Cortina d’Ampezzo. The skiing is world-class as are the shops, with plenty of exclusive boutiques lining the main street. After a day on the slopes, relax at your luxury hotel and indulge in some serious fine dining.
HISTORY
The Dolomites saw ferocious fighting in World War I. While in Cortina d’Ampezzo, make time to visit the Cinque Torri Open Air Museum. This fascinating museum tells the story of the warfare in this region in a moving way. The views from here are stupendous.
APRÈS-SKI
Once you’ve had your fill of the piste you can fill up at a vast choice of restaurants off the slopes. The Socrepes and Cinque Torri areas have plenty of excellent restaurants, including a Michelin star or two. And the après-ski in Cortina d’Ampezzo itself is lively and exciting.
SKIING
There are excellent nursery slopes for beginners here, and wide piste that are perfect for snowboarding. You have to go a bit further afield from your luxury hotel for red and black runs. But if you’re an ace skier, give the Forcella run a try.
The Italians tend to hit the slopes later in the day, so head out early and the ski lifts won’t be too crowded.
