Introducing Gubbio

It’s not just the buildings that make you feel like you’ve gone back in time when you arrive in Gubbio. The sense of history runs strongly here, and locals uphold and respect ancient customs like the Corsa dei Ceri. Another time-honoured tradition is fine dining, and you’ll find sumptuous local produce and excellent wines on every menu.

Things to do

LANDMARKS
If you appreciate architecture you’ll adore Gubbio. Explore the ancient open-air Roman theatre and remarkable Renaissance Palazzos. And discover the Palazzo dei Consoli that towers over the town. It’s home to the Iguvine tablets that date back to the 1st century BC.

CULTURE
If you’re here on the 15th May, put your running shoes on. The Corsa dei Ceri is an annual race, in which three teams run up to the basilica of St Ubaldo, each carrying a statue of their patron saint. It’s a riot of celebration and devotion, and you’ll feel like you’re witnessing something from a bygone era.

NATURE
Mount Ingino rises above the city and you’ll doubtless be able to see it from your luxury hotel. On the slopes of the mountain you’ll find the Ranghiasci Park, a lovely oasis with well-kept gardens and idyllic views of Gubbio below you.

Top Tip from SLH

Contestants in the Corsa dei Ceri run up the mountain to the Basilica of St Ubaldo, but you don’t have to. Take the Funivia cable car from Porta Romana and enjoy the views.
