Things to do
CULTURE
Get to know Oslo’s distinct neighbourhoods, each with their own identities and energies. Step back in time in central Oslo, with its graceful streets lined with grand architecture. Drop into the Rådhuset to view the famous murals showing Norway’s history. Get to know the city’s contemporary side in vibrant waterside neighbourhoods like Bjørvika, home to relaxed bars and cafes and floating saunas. Or dive into the independent boutiques, vintage shops and local restaurants in stylish Grünerløkka.
ART
The first name that comes to mind when thinking about Norwegian art may be Edvard Munch, but there’s far more to Oslo’s art scene than The Scream. MUNCH museum is a showstopper – but busy. So if you’re in the mood for somewhere quieter, try Astrup Fearnley for contemporary art or enjoy a stroll through Vigeland sculpture park. Follow a day of art with an evening of music at one of the city’s many lively jazz clubs – from intimate venues in the city centre, to eclectic bars along the waterfront.
NATURE
If you crave a break from the city buzz, you can hop on the metro and be among pristine forests and lakes in no time at all. Oslo is tucked among the dramatic fjords of Norway’s coast, with plenty of opportunities to explore on foot or by boat. Take a day trip to an island such as Malmøya to discover tranquil beaches and sheltered bays dotted with boats. Or hike up to the peaks behind the city to see the whole of Oslofjord spread out in front of you. If you’re here in the colder months, swap hiking boots for snowshoes to explore the forests around the city.
